SAAS Volunteer roles

There is a volunteer role for everyone at SA Ambulance Service. No matter what your experience is, there are many types of operational and non-operational roles you might like to do.

 

Operational Roles

If you’re looking for an operational role, you will be required to successfully complete a nationally accredited certification before you are put on the station roster.

SA Ambulance Service is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO 0264) which is a vocational education organisation that provides training that results in qualifications that are recognised and accepted throughout Australia. These qualifications are provided to SA Ambulance Service volunteers free of charge in return for their service to the community. There are three stages to the Volunteer Graduated Authority to Practice Pathway.

  • Ambulance Assist - 1st level operational role
  • Ambulance Responder - 2nd level operational role
  • Ambulance Officer - 3rd level operational role

What do operational ambulance volunteers do?

  • Go on roster to attend emergencies or patient transfers and help maintain the 24-hour ambulance service in their regional community.
  • Attend regular training sessions online or with their team at their home station to maintain skills.
  • Undertake a minimum of 30 hours on the roster each month.
  • Complete accurate patient care records for ambulance attendances.
  • Work with staff and volunteers from SA Ambulance Service, other emergency services and the public.
  • Comply with the SA Ambulance Service Volunteer Code of Ethics and Conduct and represent the organisation positively at all times.
  • Maintain vehicles and ambulance equipment.
  • Take part in community engagement activities to help promote volunteering at SA Ambulance Service.

 

Non-operational volunteers

Our volunteer teams also have non-operational volunteer roles available at their station. These include roles such as administration, gardening, cleaning and stocking ambulances, information technology support for the team, and assisting with recruitment and community engagement activities.

How can businesses support SAAS volunteers?

Businesses and organisations play an integral role in supporting their employees to respond to ambulance cases during work.

Is this you?

  • Do you live in or near a country town with a volunteer ambulance station?
  • Are you 17 years old or older?
  • Are you fit, healthy and willing to pass a medical test?
  • Do you hold a full driver’s licence or a provisional licence?
  • Are you willing to meet our immunisation requirements, obtain a police clearance and a Working with Children Clearance?
  • If you have a VISA for Australia, does your classification allow you to volunteer?

If your answer is ‘yes’ to these questions:

  • Are you willing to complete a Certificate II in Medical Service First Response, approximately 150 hours of self-paced learning and assessment in addition to 250 hours of work placement in a supervised environment completed over 3 to 12 months? (Further study options available)
  • Once qualified, can you commit to 30 hours on the roster each month?
  • Can you attend regular online and in-person training sessions at your station to keep abreast of processes and procedures?
  • Have you received two doses of a TGA approved COVID-19 vaccination?
